Do your gums bleed when you brush and floss your teeth?
Many people may frequently deal with bleeding gums but don’t realize that they have gum inflammation or gingivitis. Gingivitis quickly leads to periodontitis or gum disease. However, not all gingivitis may progress to gum disease if properly and promptly treated. Because gum disease is preventable and treatable, it is important to look for common symptoms like bleeding gums.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
There are several signs of periodontitis to be aware of, including:
- Gum swelling
- Loose teeth
- Halitosis (Bad breath)
- Gum recession
- Shifting teeth
Periodontitis may also lead to more dental concerns and heart problems such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and heart attacks.
Treating Gum Disease
There are several surgical and non-surgical gum treatments that can be done to reverse the damage of periodontitis and clean beneath the gums.
Scaling and Root Planing: These options are often used together to stop gum inflammation at the source. Scaling removes plaque and tartar from beneath the gum line and cleans out the infection. Through the process of root planing, the tooth roots are smoothed out so that the gums can reattach to teeth.
Gum graft surgery: For this surgery, a doctor will take tissue from the mouth and use it to cover up the tooth roots. Gum grafting can help prevent tooth loss that occurs in later stages of gum disease.
Flap surgery: Flap surgery consists of the gums being lifted and the plaque and tartar being cleaned from underneath. This treatment can help treat deep gum pockets and reverse their effects.
